Update – October 2023: Microsoft have withdrawn the free upgrade for Windows 7 to 10. You may still be able to use your reserved upgrade privilage by reinstalling with a Windows 10 DVD and entering your Windows 7 license key during installation.
Still running Windows 7? It’s well over time for you to upgrade to Windows 10 to continue to get security updates.
Fortunately Microsoft still allows you to upgrade to Windows 10 for free using the Windows Update Assistant: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10
Download and run the tool. Follow the prompts to install Windows 10.
Notes:
- If the update assistant fails to start with error codes 0x80072f8f 0x20000, you may need to enable TLS 1.2 in Windows 7, the easiest way to do this is with the EasyFix tool from Microsoft: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/update-to-enable-tls-1-1-and-tls-1-2-as-default-secure-protocols-in-winhttp-in-windows-c4bd73d2-31d7-761e-0178-11268bb10392#bkmk_easy
- No reboot is required after running the EasyFix
- Norton Security will prevent the upgrade from working, you will need to uninstall Norton Security, perform the upgrade, then reinstall Nortons.
